Is Cinderella 99 indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Cinderella 99 is a sativa-dominant hybrid.1 Strain databases list its parents as Jack Herer and Shiva Skunk; the breeder, Mr. Soul, describes the actual plants: Princess, grown from a seed found in a Jack Herer bud, crossed with Shiva Skunk and backcrossed to Princess until the 1999 release.1,2,3,4

Princess and Shiva Skunk

Princess grew from one of a few seeds Mr. Soul found in a Jack Herer bud bought at the Sensi Smile coffeeshop in Amsterdam in 1996. Her father is unknown: the breeder says stray pollen somehow reached Sensi’s grow room.3,11

He describes her as short and compact, with a sweet, tropical-fruit scent, a "trippy" high and a 50-day finish. Two sisters from the same bud, Genius and Café Girl, became the mothers of Brothers Grimm’s Apollo lines and of Rosetta Stone.3,11

Jack Herer is a Sensi Seeds hybrid that Leafly describes as a Haze hybrid crossed with Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk.12 For the other side of Cinderella 99, Mr. Soul used a male of Sensi’s Shiva Skunk, which he chose as heavy-yielding, dense and resinous, to strengthen Princess’s branches.3

How Princess became Cinderella 99

Mr. Soul used a method he calls cubing: each generation is a male from the previous one crossed back to Princess, so the share of Princess genes rises with every step, which his notation records as P.50, P.75, P.88 and P.94.3 By that arithmetic, he notes, Cinderella 99, a P94 male crossed to Princess, is technically P97, and SeedFinder lists P97 as one of its names.3

Which parents? Three accounts

The accounts differ in detail rather than substance: strain databases shorten the line to its two source strains, while the breeder names the plants he actually crossed.1,3

Weedmaps’ version leaves out the last backcross generation (P94) that the breeder describes.3,15

How sativa is it?

Every source puts it on the sativa side, but the numbers vary: AllBud lists 85% sativa and 15% indica, while Alchimia, which sells Brothers Grimm’s regular seeds, lists it as over 60% sativa.2,13 Leafly calls it a sativa-dominant hybrid, and Weedmaps and SeedFinder call it mostly sativa.1,3,15

Seed versions and phenotypes

The Brothers Grimm original was sold as regular seeds, and SeedFinder lists it as never available feminized.3 After the company returned, it released "Cinderella 99 2016", made by crossing the original Princess female with a male chosen from the original Cinderella 99 seeds, and Mr. Soul began making feminized Cinderella 99 seeds in 2016.11,16

Female Seeds has sold its own feminized C99 since 2003, developed from the original Brothers Grimm line; it says one phenotype smells of grapefruit and the other of pineapple.17 Dutch Passion’s Auto Cinderella Jack is an autoflowering cross of Cinderella 99 and Jack Herer with Magnum.18

Our lab dataset counts "Cinderella 99", "C99" and "Cindy 99" as Cinderella 99 and excludes names that add another strain: 150 near-miss results, the largest group being "49 DURBAN x CINDY 99" (84 tests).19
